About the Project

R4Rural: Resilience and sustainability for rural communities

R4Rural is a multi-partner collaborative project that aims to produce knowledge, methods, and training outcomes to increase resilience in small rural communities under pressure from depopulation and climate change.

Context

Why R4Rural?

Many small rural settlements in Europe are becoming socially and economically vulnerable due to youth migration, difficulties in accessing services, and increasing climate risks. R4Rural combines research, field-based co-production, and capacity building to enhance the resilience of these settlements.

Objective 1
To create a knowledge base on small rural communities at risk due to population decline and climate change.
Objective 2
In this context, the goal is to construct a theoretical model of resilience and provide a measurable framework.
Objective 3
Developing solutions and generating replicable best practices in collaboration with local stakeholders through the Living Lab approach.
Objective 4
Building capacity and expanding impact through training materials, publications, and story maps.
Approach

Methodology: Living Lab flow

An implementation cycle that goes into the field, is designed in collaboration with stakeholders, and clearly shares the results.

1
Define & Map
Community profile, climate risks, service ecosystem and needs assessment.
2
Co-production
Co-developing solution ideas with local government, NGOs, academia, and citizens.
3
Pilot & Learn
Field testing, feedback gathering, and iterative improvement.
4
Share & Scale
Dissemination through publications, story maps, training content, and reproducible guides.
Outputs

Concrete deliverable set

Project outputs transform research findings into practical tools and produce a reference set applicable in different countries.

Knowledge Base
Case profiles, datasets, indicators, and a library of best practices.
Resilience Framework
Resilience dimensions, measurement approach, and policy/implementation recommendations.
Story Maps
Narrative maps and case presentations visualizing field findings.
Training Packages
Modular content, implementation guides, and learning materials for stakeholders.
Effect

Expected results

R4Rural aims to strengthen local capacity, accelerate resilience planning, and bridge the gap between policy and practice.

Public & Local Authorities
Applicable frameworks for planning, risk mitigation, and service design.
Communities & Civil Society
Collective intelligence through participatory processes; locally owned solutions.
Academia & Training
Transforming research findings into training modules and disseminating them through open access.
